JBS Fund for the Amazon

In addition to our efforts to strengthen our supply chains, JBS is committed to the sustainable development of those communities found in the Amazon biome. The newly created JBS Fund for the Amazon will be dedicated to financing initiatives and projects that expand conservation of the forest and the sustainable development of the communities that live there.

JBS will contribute R$ 250 million over the first five years to ensure the Fund is able to undertake its crucial work of implementing core initiatives which are principally designed to:

  • Maximize the use of financial and technical resources for the reforestation and conservation of the Amazon
  • Promote sustainable development, with the focus on the food industry, creating a sustainable value chain
  • Increase the sustainable use of the land to support the local communities by creating jobs and income
  • Enhance the sustainable socioeconomic research and development of the Amazon

For the Fund to achieve its target of raising R$ 1 billion by 2030, JBS has agreed to match additional third-party donations until its own contribution reaches R$ 500 million. The Fund will be led by Joanita Maestri Karoleski, former CEO of Seara, with the support of a Board of Directors, a Fiscal Council, a Consultative Council and a Technical Committee. The Fund will additionally be audited by KMPG and produce regular progress reports.

Welcoming the creation of the Fund, Karoleski commented:

“Curbing illegal deforestation is a key challenge to defending the Amazon. This challenge can only be effectively met by focusing on the quality of life and economic opportunities for the population of the region, especially the indigenous and riverine peoples and the quilombola communities who live there.”
